But business was so good he expanded creating an extra 1,000sq.m of greenhouse area.

Vietnam seeks foreign capital for renewable energy projects

By the end of 2018, the total capacity of renewable power projects had accounted for 2.1 percent of total electricity output in Vietnam.

However, Deputy Minister of Industry and Trade Cao Quoc Hung affirmed that developing renewable energy to ease the reliance on traditional power generation methods is one of Vietnam’s priority tasks.

Under the national strategy on renewable energy development for 2015-2030, Vietnam’s electricity output from renewable sources would increase from 58 billion kwh in 2015 to 101 billion kwh in 2020, 186 billion kwh in 2030 and 452 billion kwh by 2050, or 42 percent of total electricity output.

To reach that goal, the government has offered a series of preferences to investors, includng credit access, tax and land rent remissions, and the application of the Feed-in-Tariff electricity pricing mechanism for solar, wind, biomass power.

By the end of 2018, more than 10,000 MW of solar power had been registered by investors, while PPAs (power purchase agreemen…

AI in agriculture production still underused in Vietnam

Seagull ADC in Hau Giang province is hailed as the pioneer in using AI in agricultural production. At its farms, sensors are used to measure the humidity in melon-growing membrane houses. If the humidity is too high, the system will automatically turn on ventilators to suck moisture out, and if the temperature becomes too high, a screen will be activated to shade plants.

Nguyen Thi Phuong Thao, deputy CEO of VinEco, is satisfied about the results.

“AI solutions help us build up different production plans for different weather, land and climate conditions,” she said.

Farmers in Tay Ninh, the partners of Lavifood, have also been applying AI solutions in cultivation. The solutions tell them how much fertilizer they need to use and how much water to irrigate, after considering the humidity level.

Lavifood can get detailed information about types of soil and the crops suited to that soil. It has joined forces with some enterprises to produce specific fertilizer products that help improve …

Honey makers profit from Lang Son flowers

Farmers in the northern province of Lang Son and neighbouring provinces are earning good money from honey throughout the year.

With fresh and cool weather, Van Thuy Commune in Chi Lang District has many kinds of wildflowers and their honey-making is also very developed. There is a huge amount of ivy trees in Van Thuy which are popular as medicine for coughs and high blood pressure.

Honey made with ivy trees is especially expensive since the ivy trees only bloom once at the end of the year, in November and December. During this time, the bees often go into hibernation but the bees in Van Thuy still work, producing the honey that tastes both sweet and bitter.

Wildflower honey costs VND350,000 (USD350,000) per litre while the ivy tree honey costs VND500,000 per litre. Despite the higher prices, Van Thuy farmers said they couldn't meet demand. Many households in Van Thuy have established a co-operative and created their own brand of honey to improve business.

The terrace fields in Sapa (Photo: City Pass Guide)

Based on the votes of readers from all over the world on its social media channel, the UK travel site provided the list for travelers to consider when booking their next holiday.

From the impressive rock formations of Ha Long Bay off the northern coast to the terraced rice fields of mountainous Sapa on the Chinese border, Vietnam has a wealth of easily accessible natural beauty, the site wrote.

Its cities are alluring too, whether you prefer the modern skyscrapers of Ho Chi Minh City or the appealing contrast in Hanoi between the old and the new as the country has rebounded with vigor in the 40 or so years since the end of the American War.

Rough Guide also appreciated that direct flights now arrive from cities worldwide, roads are being upgraded, new hotels are springing up, and Vietnam’s raucous entrepreneurial spirit is alive and well, bringi…

Vietnam to use smart apps, drones for forest protection

Forest rangers and forest owners would be able to use their mobile devices and ‘go on patrol’ with smart applications.

The smart apps will help them quickly discover foreign fires and illegal logging sites.

According to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD), Vietnam has 14.38 million hectares of forests with coverage level of 41 percent.

In some localities, management agencies have installed systems to automatically collect information from forests, and update information about status and weather conditions so as to give exact predictions about forest fires. The information can be automatically sent to forest owners and agencies.

The system can also automatically create firefighting solutions for every forest area in the most effective way.

However, because of the low living standards and hard life, it is difficult for forest protectors to access high technologies. The application of technology in forest protection and development can be deployed in only some local…

Vietnamese rice makes name in world market

In 2018, Vietnam’s total rice exports reached 6.15 million tonnes, with export turnover of 3.15 billion USD. The industry saw a 5.7% increase in volume and 19.6% increase in value compared to 2017.

Loc Troi 28 is a short term rice variety and the final product between the hybrid of Loc Troi 1 and Basmati rice variety of India. High-yielding, fragrant and nutritious compared to other varieties, Loc Troi 28 was well received at an international rice convention held in China.

Vietnamese rice producers now focus on production value, not just increasing volume. Furthermore, Vietnam has become a member of the global sustainable rice production programme, and for the first time in years, Vietnam rice price is higher than Thailand’s.

In recent years, Vietnam’s rice industry has paid more attention to promotional activities. The launch of Vietnam’s national rice logo has reiterated the efforts to bring more rice to the world market.

However, in the context of global warming and unpredictable w…
