Vietnamese rice makes name in world market

In 2018, Vietnam’s total rice exports reached 6.15 million tonnes, with export turnover of 3.15 billion USD. The industry saw a 5.7% increase in volume and 19.6% increase in value compared to 2017.



Loc Troi 28 is a short term rice variety and the final product between the hybrid of Loc Troi 1 and Basmati rice variety of India. High-yielding, fragrant and nutritious compared to other varieties, Loc Troi 28 was well received at an international rice convention held in China.

Vietnamese rice producers now focus on production value, not just increasing volume. Furthermore, Vietnam has become a member of the global sustainable rice production programme, and for the first time in years, Vietnam rice price is higher than Thailand’s.

In recent years, Vietnam’s rice industry has paid more attention to promotional activities. The launch of Vietnam’s national rice logo has reiterated the efforts to bring more rice to the world market.

However, in the context of global warming and unpredictable weather patterns, as well as limitation in value chains and farmers’ struggle to make a living from growing rice, there is much needed to be done.

The global market is changing at a rapid pace and it requires Vietnam’s rice industry to heighten the production volume, improve the quality and deliver more diverse rice products.

Vietnam’s rice brand logo unveiled

Vietnam’s rice brand logo has been launched at the on-going third Vietnam Rice Festival organised in the Mekong Delta province of Long An.

The logo was selected from around 500 entries from across the country and abroad sent to a logo contest on the Vietnamese rice trademark held by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD) last year. It features an ear of rice with rice leaves shaped like the image of chim lạc (a legendary bird). The phrase Vietnam Rice is written on the green oval-shaped logo.

Vietnam has submitted an international trademark registration application for the logo to the Madrid system of World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO).

After receiving WIPO feedback, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development will issue regulations for using the logo when exporting rice.

Canada wants to sell more cherries in Vietnam

The Canadian Embassy in Vietnam organized a cherry tasting event in Ho Chi Minh City on Saturday to celebrate the start of a new season and promote the fruits to local consumers.

“In Vietnam, Canadian cherries enjoy an increasing popularity among consumers,” said Barbara Nadeau, commercial counsellor of Canada in Vietnam.

In 2015, Canadian exports of fresh cherries to Vietnam increased by nearly 50 percent to over 1.7 million Canadian dollars (US$1.3 million).

Overall, exports of Canadian fresh fruits, including cherries and Ambrosia apples, have increased by 80 percent, reaching nearly 4 million Canadian dollars in 2015.

According to Canadian Embassy in Hanoi, agricultural and agri-food is an important and growing part of the Canada-Vietnam bilateral trade, representing more than half of Canada’s total exports to Vietnam.

Canadian exports of agri-food and seafood to Vietnam in 2015 totaled 353.6 million Canadian dollars, up by more than 48 percent over 2014.
